The "Work Permit" vs The Solopreneur's Bargain

Ever wondered why Mr Masters calls a degree a pricey 'work permit'? 🎓💸

Well, in todays feature post, lets discover why swapping lecture halls for a solopreneur path might just be the cleverest trade youll ever make. 🚀

Higher Learning or Higher Earning?

Welcome again friends, Mike Masters here, and let me preface this feature length post by telling you that I am many things to many people, but what I am not is a Mathematician...

But it only takes some rudimentary understanding of the numbers to quickly realize that people pursuing a 'Degree' - or 'glorified Work Permit' as I colloquially call them are often very much 'Quids out.'

And for our international audience - yes - all of the denominations are in Pounds, shillings and pence.

(As the costs are all based on UK numbers anyway)

Thinking of embarking on a university degree in the UK? I salute you (well, kind of)

Its admirable and even something that im sure your families will be proud of, but I honestly don't believe that its necessarily the best way forward for you.

(unless of course you desire to be a Doctor or a Dentist and such like) but for anybody else...heres why...

So fasten your wallet's seatbelt, because you're in for a wild ride of expenses !

Picture this: annual tuition fees tapping out at a hefty £9,250, and that's before the textbooks march in, costing a nifty £285 each year.

And let’s not forget the humble abode, a modest £1,190 monthly outside London to keep a roof over your head.

The financial plot thickens if you venture into the bustling streets of London, where rents soar to an eye-watering £2,121 per month. (Or more)

Let's summarize and calculate the estimated total cost of obtaining a university degree in the UK, considering tuition, accommodation, and textbooks:

Tuition Fees: £9,250 per year (for England)

Accommodation: £1,190 per month outside London (cheaper regions), totaling about £14,280 per year (assuming 12 months, although students may only rent for the academic year, typically 9-10 months).

Textbooks and Course Materials: £285 per year.

Now, we'll add these costs to get a total for one year and then estimate the cost for a typical three-year program.

Total Annual Cost: £9,250 (tuition) + £14,280 (accommodation) + £285 (textbooks) = £23,815 per year.

Total for Three Years: £23,815 x 3 = £71,445.

WOW.

Diploma or Financial Dilemma?

Calling a Degree a "work permit" might sound like a joke, but with the mountain of bills it brings, the punchline hits your bank account hard.

It's a steep price for a piece of parchment that whispers sweet nothings about potential job prospects...

Investing in Independence

Now, let's flip the script. Imagine shelling out for a course that teaches you to be a Solopreneur with the potential for earnings that could make Bill Gates do a double-take. Lets assume that it cost you £5000.

Expensive? Perhaps.

But when compared to the saga of expenses from a traditional degree, it's like choosing between a golden goose and a regular, albeit very educated, duck.

Costly Course or Cash Cow?

While university degrees load you up with knowledge (and debt), investing in a course that could catapult you into entrepreneurial stardom is looking less like an expense and more like a savvy investment. Why chase job openings when you can create your own?

So, if the cost of a traditional "work permit" seems daunting, remember: the price tag on the unlimited potential of going solo might just be the real bargain here....

But more about why (and how) in my forthcoming exposes.

And friends, If you have gained value from this Master Elements long form Article - remember, these things dont just write themselves kids.

A Like and a Retweet is always greatly appreciated and a Follow - well that makes Mike thankful forever.

Until next time I will conclude by saying (honestly)

I have nothing against a Degree, or anybody who elects to work hard in obtaining one.

But when you see the figures worked out as we have in my Article today, it really gets you thinking doesnt it...

Until next time friends,

Stay positive, stay focused and stay building.

Yours,

Michael Masters - The Info Architect 💘
